Chawton House itself is over four hundred years old, and the recorded history of the land on which it stands stretches even further back. From 1996 to 2003, extensive restoration work was carried out on the house and estate, prior to the opening of Chawton House Library as a UK registered charity in 2003. The house is regularly open to visitors, alongside library readers, for tours and during public events.
We need volunteers to welcome, answer queries, give assistance and information to the visitors during their visit as part of a team of Volunteers each day.
There are a variety of roles such as; Helping on reception to take the money and welcome visitors. Assist visitors on their free flow tour of the House, one volunteer on the lower floor and one on the upper floor. Volunteers also are needed to help in the Tea Rooms and Shop, but you wouldn't be expected to make the tea as there is a catering team. There are also opportunities in the Library, the Art Collection and the Gardens.
Opening times are 2 pm until 4.30 pm, Tue-Fri until end of October.
Warm and friendly person, an interest in culture and heritage would be welcome. Familiarity with the works of female writers of the period, for example the works of Jane Austen would be of help to us.
